People sometimes say, "But you can't save all the dogs!" No, but we can do as much as we can. If we all do our bit, however small, towards avoiding unnecessary suffering, then we are moving in a positive direction.
After many years of rescue work in the Perche we moved down to the Poitou-Charentes in 2003 with all our animals, thinking we would now be able to slow down and just take care of the pets we already had. We soon learnt that there was no animal shelter in the Deux-Sèvres, except for the Niort pound/shelter just for that area. We could not stay indifferent to the plight of the animals being put down at Niort and elsewhere. So we have been continuing to help whenever possible. Those adoptable are neutered, identified and vaccinated before being offered to a new home. One of our great concerns is the older pet who often finds himself disgarded when his elderly owner dies or goes into a home. We love the "oldies" and try to give them a comfortable and happy end to their life.
There are many different associations, organisations and devoted people working for animal welfare in France and we are very grateful to all the British animal lovers over here who are joining in and playing an important role. Together we can all make a difference.
